The Mummy (1999), directed by Stephen Sommers, is an action-adventure film that blends elements of classic horror with high-octane thrills and humor. It is a modern reimagining of the 1932 film of the same name, but with a more family-friendly and swashbuckling tone. The film stars Brendan Fraser, Rachel Weisz, John Hannah, and Arnold Vosloo.
Set in the 1920s, the film follows adventurer Rick O’Connell (Brendan Fraser) who, along with his brother, stumbles upon the ancient city of Hamunaptra, the legendary City of the Dead. They are seeking treasure, but their expedition is interrupted by a group of treasure hunters led by the ambitious Evelyn Carnahan (Rachel Weisz), a librarian and aspiring Egyptologist, and her bumbling brother Jonathan (John Hannah).
They accidentally awaken Imhotep (Arnold Vosloo), a cursed high priest who was buried alive thousands of years earlier for attempting to resurrect his forbidden lover, Anck-su-Namun. Imhotep’s resurrection unleashes a series of supernatural events as he seeks to complete his ritual and bring his lover back to life, leading to chaos and destruction.
